Dragobete, the Romanian Version of Valentine’s Day

It's the morning of February 24th.

In an old Romanian village, a young woman and a young man, dressed in the latest fashions, are meeting in front of the church. Is the great day of celebrating love and joy. Along with similar couples, singing altogether, they go in the woods to talk and play around the fire. The girls are picking the first spring bouquet of flowers and singing along. At noon, the young ladies are running to the village. The young men follow the ladies and trying to kiss them.

In this great day, their kiss is considered their first true kiss. A symbolic engagement is announced in front of the people and parents. On this day the village is singing and dancing to celebrating love.

This old tradition is called Dragobete. He is a mythical Romanian god of love, joy and youth. A Romanian Valentine's day.

It is considered that this is the day spring is rising over winter. People who are celebrating stay healthy and in love over the year.

Together with the beginning of spring, music can help us feel more love and compassion for one another. Below, you will find a musical gift.
