How Do We Keep Ourselves Motivated on a Long Term?

Updated: Jul 17, 2022

It all depends on how much we like what we do.

If we do something we adore, that activity contributes to our happiness, and our mind will connect the experience to a pleasant memory. In fact, the experience becomes a happy memory in its sense. This is usually reflected in our wellbeing and in our genuine smile. How many smiles can we collect in a lifetime? :)

I am sharing these ideas with you like I would talk to myself in the mirror. If this post resonates with you, that is great!

  • Do what you like, so you never feel you work.

  • Let your activity be fun. There are always creative ways to achieve your goals.

  • If you feel a calling, follow it. It will guide you. Follow it with such passion that you make a difference for everybody involved.

  • Vary your activities. We always look for something different, whether we know it or not.

  • Do things that connect you to your happiness. It can be a mixture of old and new things, or it can be anything that inspires you.

  • Be the person you dream to be, and let your vision be your mentor. Answers come as you go along.

As a teacher, I am listing some aspects about keeping children motivated.

  • Models

Children become motivated by what they see, and they naturally tend to copy it. For example, if they like a character, chances are they may want to be like that particular character. This can influence their decisions later on.

  • Variety

Children get bored quite quickly, therefore variety is very important in keeping them active.

  • Encouragement

They normally absorb information easily, if nothing interferes with their ability to learn. Comparing children between themselves does not bring any benefits to anyone involved , as this teaches them how to waste their energy and put all their focus outside their progress. Each child is unique, with different gifts to share. Our job as adults is to spot these gifts and polish them in a way that benefits them and the ones around them.

  • Reward and discipline

We usually associate discipline with strictness. It does not have to be like this. Kids need to understand the importance of having continuity in anything they do. I have noticed that children respond quite well to being rewarded after each step they take. I would not offer material rewards to the young ones. Instead, the rewards can take different forms varying from colourful stickers to interactive games, stories or different learning opportunities for those who want them. The most important thing is for them to feel they have something unique to offer in their own way.

If you feel like adding anything else to the list, you can leave a comment below. I encourage you to share your experiences, so we can evolve together.

Love,

Adriana.
