Dear beautiful soul,
Have you ever asked yourself what is the connection between music and friendship? How can music bring people together?
Lots of students were running along the corridors with their school bags and musical instruments. Parents, grandparents and teachers were going back and forth. Everybody wanted something at the same time……like in a hotel reception. Each day seemed to pass in the same way as the previous one, but only in appearance.
It was almost the end of the school year. Everybody was already thinking about the summer holiday.
‘Who cares about classes this time of the year, when the sun is shining and the weather is so beautiful?’ said Lucy to herself. Suddenly, she saw her friend coming upstairs, among the big crowd of people.
‘Ellie, what are you doing now?’
‘I have a class that starts in a few minutes’.
‘Ok, you do not have it anymore!’ and she grabbed her friend’s hand and both of them managed to squeeze through the group of people, going towards the school’s exit and heading directly to the park.
After fifteen minutes, they arrived in one of their favourite places: the popcorn booth. With their popcorn bags in their hands, they enjoyed their snack while admiring the lake.
‘Let’s hire a hydro bike and explore the lake!’ said Ellie.
‘Good idea!’
As the two girls cycled, the hydro bike was getting closer and closer to the water fountain that was placed in the middle of the lake. They just wanted to take a better look at it, without getting too close. Too bad! Before realising, they were right under the fountain, getting completely wet from tip to toe. And this was right before Ellie’s piano audition and Lucy’s rehearsal for her Graduation concert. Now they would have to go back to school and play in their wet clothes.
Once they got back to school, everybody was watching the two girls as if they were from another planet. Aliens in manifestation!
Ellie rushed upstairs, straight to the recital room. No warm-up time! The weather was warm enough and hopefully this would make her fingers fly over the piano keys.
Lucy was 45 minutes late for her rehearsal. When she opened the door of the hall, the conductor looked at her wondering where she was coming from. ‘Are you ok?’ The conductor asked her surprised and curious at the same time.
‘Yes, just late. Sorry.’
From the school garden, light could be seen in one of the first floor’s classrooms after everybody left. Ellie and Lucy were playing together some funny folk pieces on their violins, and recording them…..on their phones, while laughing and dancing. Occasionally, they were improvising some bits as well.
Suddenly the school guardian opened the door and saw the ‘show’. Amused, he started laughing.
'Are you guys not going home?' he asked them.'It is late.'
'One more tune and we are done....for today.'
Fast forward ten years and the same two girls are now in London, playing together in an event, this time under a ship (instead of a water fountain). Nothing has changed since their high school years.
I am curious to hear your comments. How can music bring people together?
