Music Appreciation Starts at a Young Age

Updated: Jan 26, 2022

Children are very receptive to all kinds of information, including music. They learn by copying what they see, and they also react to sounds. It is known that these visual and audible interactions develop their brain and their personalities in an harmonious way.

This is why I believe it is important for kids to grow up in a musical environment. It does not have to be a professional one, just a musical one, where kids can hear songs, learn to dance, to sing and to play an instrument.

Children learn to appreciate music in their early years of life, through the numerous benefits that come with it (which I have included in a previous post here)

There are games that include music and help the little ones interact with the environment. Ideally they should have the chance to experience these sounds and see at least some of the domestic animals that produce sounds in real life, so they can have a deeper understanding of how sounds are connected to nature.

Here are some of these games:

  • imitation of some sounds made by animals and nature (for a deeper connection with the environment)

  • group songs (for socialising)

  • clapping games (for socialising and body movement, often combined with group songs)

  • guessing games (a tune is played a few times by an adult differently each time, so the kids can recognise the differences)

  • dancing games (where rhythm changes are accompanied by various dance movements that match them)

  • copying games (where the little ones copy the motions, and rhythms produced by their parent or teacher through clapping, clicking their fingers etc)

These are just a few examples on how music can be included in children's daily education and activities.

Do you have any other suggestions? If so, what would those be?
