My Connection With George Enescu's Music

Updated: May 21, 2023

I have been waiting for a while to repost a piece that is very special to me, and that is George Enescu's Fiddler for solo violin. Regardless of how many times I play it, I like to come back to it, because I always feel the need for a deeper and clearer way of expressing the meaning of his music.

Similar to learning any other piece of music, it has been a journey over the years for me to connect with George Enescu's music, considering my initial dislike of it.

During my music studies, I have stayed away from his music as much as possible, except of those circumstances when I have had to play his music regardless of my opinion about it. His music was hard for me to comprehend at the time.

It was only a few years ago, when, away from home, I started to truly get the meaning of his music. The experience of living in a different country has intensified the sounds, senses, images and lifestyle that I used to pass over so easily during my childhood, where many of the elements from Enescu's music were present in Romania. I was longing for them. When I realised this, I started crying. It felt as if I had missed something in the distant past. However, it was not long before deciding to 'take those memories with me' and integrating them onto the way I play Enescu's music. And it worked. It helped me heal and connect not only with my past self, but also to the ones around me.

Do you feel any special connection to a specific piece of music? And if so, why?
