A Gratitude Thought in the Memory of Ciprian Porumbescu

Updated: Jul 17, 2022

On October 14th 1853 Romanian composer, conductor, violinist and pianist Ciprian Porumbescu was born in Bukovina, a region that was a part of the Austrian Empire back then, now a part of North Romania. He wrote an operetta, Crai Nou (translation: 'Crescent Moon'), as well as other instrumental pieces, including: Ballad for Violin and Orchestra, and Dorul (The Longing) for Cello and Piano, etc.

He also wrote poetry, lyrics and press articles, and took part in the cultural life, driven by his desire to see his country flourish and regain its independence.

Having had lived for only 29 years, his activity as a composer did not count many published works. However, his dedication to music combined with his romantic nature,

led him create a deeply expressive music. He was also driven by the two great loves he had: his country and Berta Gorgon, his lover. Their relationship did not materialise in the way they wanted, and as a result, both of them constantly thought of each other. His career took him to Chernivtsi (Ukraine), Vienna and Brasov (Romania).

Reverie for Violin and Piano is one of his known pieces, among his Ballad for Violin and Piano/Orchestra that is probably his most famous composition.

In terms of meaning, Reverie expresses a daydreaming state with contrasting feelings, which perfectly describes the composer's nature.

In my view, another sign of his daydreaming state is expressed in his operetta, Crai Nou. The title itself carries the meaning of the Crescent Moon, a perfect moment to set new intentions for a new beginning, in the Romanian traditions linked to mysticism. Ciprian has captured the essence of this in a subtle way, through music.

Below, the recording of the Reverie.

Maria Grecu - Piano

Adriana Cristea - Violin

Many thanks to the wonderful team from Mogosoaia Palace for making this happen!
